With a score of 7/7 in the opening rounds, Fiachra progressed to the semi finals where he beat John Connolly,(last years winner) to make it to the final. In this first game he drew with Conor O’Donnell, when Conor took his last pawn with only one second left on the clock. A second match was played to determine the winner of the St. Benildus Annual blitz , in aid of the Simon Community, between Conor and Fiachra, pictured below. Conor was the victor and Fiachra placed 2nd. Congratulations
Eoghan, Sean, Stephen, Mahfuz and Cillian beat Bray Greystones 3 to 2 on Saturday even though they were out ranked on most boards. Ist win came for Stephen Higgins with a very impressive victory over his opponent Paul Brien O’Sullivan 1094, Bray won on board two , Next to finish was 8 year old Cillian Scallan, playing for the first time in the Leagues, who, remarkably, sustained his concentration for over 2 hours in a tough game, to win. Sean Hunter was next to finish with a draw against Vincent Denard , (1007). Mahfuz , stepped in to replace his son Mutharim who was ill on the day, his game was the last to finish , scoring a draw to secure the win for Rathmines.
CHALLANGERS…Congratulations to Mustakim -Ul Haque, who scored 5 points to finish joint 2nd in the Challangers section and Dayna Ferguson won the overall ladies prize on 4 points. Muhtarim -Ul Haque also finished on 4 points, Sean Hunter scored 3, Alex Mulligan 2.5, Ciara Scallan 2.5, Stephen Higgins 2.5, Peter Carton 2.5, John Carton 2.5 , Cillian Scallan 1.5, Eoin Hunter 1.5 . Felix Jordan, our newest member, in his first event scored 2pts.
CHAMPIONSHIP… Our top scorers from Rathmines in this section were Liam Coman on 3.5, Michael Higgins 3.5, Henry Li 3.5, Fiachra Scallan 3, Matthew Gallagher 3, Eoghan Turner 3. Liam beat the top seed in round 2 with a rating difference of 700pts, Fiachra beat an opponent 334pts higher than him with Matthews almost matching that with a difference of 287pts. Eoghan, playing for the first time in this section, as he won the Challangers last year,beat a player 547 pts higher than him while Henry, also in this section for the first time won with a difference of 402pts.
MASTERS…In his first time in the Masters Scott Mulligan scored 3.5 , beating the top seed, a Fide Master rated 2300, in round one. In 2012 he took part in his first Gonzga in the Challangers, moved up to the Championship the following year and this year competed in the Masters.

The Leinster Junior Chess Championships took place in the Royal Marine Hotel , DunLaoighre from the 1st to the 5th of January. It was a marathon session for many of the Rathmines juniors, some playing 12 games of competitive chess over 5 days.
Top Junior players from Leinster Clubs, Rathmines, Shankhill, Bray and DunLaoighre, Elm Mount,Blanchardstown, Curragh, Noamh Barrog, Enniscorthy,St. Benildus and Gonzaga fight it out over 5 days of intense competition.
The u10’s and u11’s took place on Jan 1st, ,with over 100 players from around Leinster taking part. Top scorer for Rathmines on the day was Sean Hunter, with a very impressive 4.5/6, he was paired against Danny Dwyer, (the eventual winner of the u10’s and u11’s with a score of 6/6) in the final round. Rathmines players scored very well in this tough event, Eoin Hunter was placed 7th and Stephen Higgins scored 4points. I will have more results of u10 and 11’s later on.
Henry Li won the u14 Leinster title on a score of 5.5/6.
Mustakim Ul Hague came joint 2nd u14 on a score of 4.5/6
Henry and Mustakim along with Muhtarim Ul Hague,Sean Hunter,Eoin Hunter,Eoghan Turner,Dierdre Turner,Liam Coman,Michael Higgins,Stephen Higgins,Matthew Gallagher,Alex Mulligan, Peter Carton, John Carton and Archie Daly opted to play in several categories over the 5 days. u 19’s was won by Cain McGovern Leahy , from Dunlaoighre cc, on 6/6. The highest scorer form Rathmines in u19’s was 11 year old Matthew Gallagher on 3/6. The u 16s, also won by Cian, was contested by Liam Coman who finished on a score of 3. The u14’s was probably the most contested section by members of Rathmines, won by Henry , closely followed by Mustakim in joint 2nd, Eoghan 3.5, Muhtarim 3,John and Peter, 2.5, Dierdre 2. Earlier in the week, Henry was cruising along on 4.5/5 in the u12’s , unfortunately losing his last match to Alex Byrne, St. Benildus, who was the eventual winner. Mustakim ,Muhtarim and Eoghan finished on 4, Stephen and Alex finished on 3, I am still awaiting final crosstable for u12’s but going into the last round Archie was on 2.5, John 2 and Dierdre 2. I’ll update later.
Its been a busy week for the members of the Rathmines Junior Chess Club. There was the round 3 Bodley match away to St.Benildus where the Rathmines B team played St. Benildus A’s. In the Ennis, Rathmines B v Aer Lingus Fiachra Scallan drew with Gearoidin Ui Laighleis (1624)
In the Heidenfeld, Scott Mulligan beat Oliver Dunne (1818) and Michael Higgins won against Terry Creighton, (1666)
It was then time to head to Kilkenny for the annual Chess Congress in the Club House Hotel.
Henry Li was the winner of the Kilkenny Challangers section on a score or 5.5/6, while Liam Coman scored 5/6 for 2nd place.
In the Kilkenny majors Scott Mulligan finished on 4/6 with a very impressive performace rating of 1959 for the tournament. and winning a grading prize.
Scoring in the James Mason were Matthew Gallagher 2.5 and Fiachra Scallan 2 and in the challengers section were Sean Hunter 4, Alex Mulligan 3, Cillian Scallan 3, Eoin Hunter 2.5, Stephen Higgins 2.5 and Ciara Scallan 2. Well done to all of you against very strong competition.
