  • Leinster Junior Chess Championships

The Leinster Junior Chess Championships took place in the Royal Marine Hotel , DunLaoighre from the 1st to the 5th of January. It was a marathon session for many of the Rathmines juniors, some playing 12 games of competitive chess over 5 days.

Top Junior players from Leinster Clubs, Rathmines, Shankhill, Bray and DunLaoighre, Elm Mount,Blanchardstown, Curragh, Noamh Barrog, Enniscorthy,St. Benildus and Gonzaga fight it out over 5 days of intense competition.

The u10’s and u11’s took place on Jan 1st, ,with over 100 players from around Leinster taking part. Top scorer for Rathmines on the day was Sean Hunter, with a very impressive 4.5/6, he was paired against Danny Dwyer, (the eventual winner of the u10’s and u11’s with a score of 6/6) in the final round. Rathmines players scored very well in this tough event, Eoin Hunter was placed 7th and Stephen Higgins scored 4points. I will have more results of u10 and 11’s later on.

Henry Li won the u14 Leinster title on a score of 5.5/6.

Mustakim Ul Hague came joint 2nd u14 on a score of 4.5/6

Henry and Mustakim along with Muhtarim Ul Hague,Sean Hunter,Eoin Hunter,Eoghan Turner,Dierdre Turner,Liam Coman,Michael Higgins,Stephen Higgins,Matthew Gallagher,Alex Mulligan, Peter Carton, John Carton and Archie Daly opted to play in several categories over the 5 days. u 19’s was won by Cain McGovern Leahy , from Dunlaoighre cc, on 6/6. The highest scorer form Rathmines in u19’s was 11 year old Matthew Gallagher on 3/6. The u 16s, also won by Cian, was contested by Liam Coman who finished on a score of 3. The u14’s was probably the most contested section by members of Rathmines, won by Henry , closely followed by Mustakim in joint 2nd, Eoghan 3.5, Muhtarim 3,John and Peter, 2.5, Dierdre 2. Earlier in the week, Henry was cruising along on 4.5/5 in the  u12’s , unfortunately losing his last match to Alex Byrne, St. Benildus, who was the eventual winner. Mustakim ,Muhtarim and Eoghan finished on 4, Stephen and Alex finished on 3, I am still awaiting final crosstable for u12’s but going into the last round Archie was on 2.5, John 2 and Dierdre  2. I’ll update later.
