A lot has been happening over the Christmas break and Rathmines Juniors have been very busy.

Well done to Cillian Scallan who won his section  of the Leinster Chess Unions Christmas Blitz in December.

The Leinster Junior Championships took place in Bray with a large group of players from Rathmines taking part.

In the u10’s Zhengzun Wang came 2nd with Andrew and Liam joint 5th, James Prenderville scored 3.5, Yubo Wang 3 and Eric Wang 2.

Great result for Utkarash Gupta 2nd in under 11’s and to Sanjay Menon, Cillian Scallan and Yubo Wang joint 3rd.

Andrew He and Liam Hunter finished on 4pts each and Jack McIntyre and Eric Wang finished on 2.5 points each in this very strong competition

Sanjay, Andrew , Eoin Hunter, Utkarash and Cillian came joint 3rd in the u12’s

In the u14’s Matthew Gallagher came 4th, Sean Hunter, Eoin Hunter and Ciara Scallan finished on 3pts, making Ciara the top scoring girl u14. While Cillian Scallan scored 2 in this section.

This year’s Mick Germaine Cup competition,  took place on 12th December in the Ierne Sports and Social Club in Drumcondra, home of the Elm Mount Chess club. The event is for teams of junior players under 16 years of age and rated below 900 or unrated.

19 teams of 4 from both chess clubs and schools took part in the 6 round competition. The outright winners, by a margin of 4.5 points, were “Rathminors”. Sanjay Menon, was the team’s highest individual scorer with a 6 wins from six games. The other three team members (Cillian Scallan, Ciara Scallan and Utkarsh Gupta also achieved impressive individual scores of 5.5, 5 and 5 respectively). The only other player in the event with a perfect score of 6 from 6 was Sam Kelly of the Malahide Majors team.

The Malahide Maurarders and Maestros finished second and third respectively while a third Malahide team, the Majors were joint 4th with the Monkstown Rooks team.

Fantastic results from all the Rathmines players across the many competitions over the Christmas period.
